HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – As part of its Your Health Matters™ educational seminar series, St. Joseph’s Mercy Health System will host Stroke: What are the warning signs? at 5:30 p.m. Thursday , April 22 in the Magnolia Room at Garvan Woodland Gardens.
Neurologist Vladimir Karpitskiy, M.D. will conduct the free information and education event that is scheduled to last approximately one hour. Dr. Karpitskiy, who practices out of the Neurology Associates of Hot Springs offices (1 Mercy Lane Medical Office Building Suite 504), will cover how to know when someone has suffered a stroke, along with warning signs and prevention techniques.
The Russian-born doctor, whose story of immigration to the United States was recently featured in a March 2010 Medical News of Arkansas physician spotlight, also plans to engage attendees in a question-and-answer session at the conclusion of his presentation.
Board certified in neurology, vascular neurology and neuromuscular medicine, Dr. Karpitskiy earned his medical degree from the Crimea State Medical Institute in Simferopol, Russia. He served his residency at Barnes-Jewish-Christian Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. One of a kind among Arkansas physicians, the Arkansas State Medical Board’s web site lists him as the only board certified vascular neurology brain stroke specialist and board certified neuromuscular medicine specialist.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that occurs, according to the American Stroke Association (division of the American Heart Association), part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs and starts to die. Behind diseases of the heart and cancer, stroke is the No. 3 cause of death in the United States.
